Free Speech Lawyer Kirsten Murfitt Joins DemocracyNZ

Well-known free speech and freedom of choice advocate Kirsten Murfitt, from NZ Lawyers Speak Out with Science (NZLSOS), will contest the 2023 General Election in the Tauranga electorate for DemocracyNZ, leader Matt King announced on Thursday.
“We are thrilled to welcome Kirsten to our growing list candidates,” Matt said today. “Kirsten personifies the values and principles that we as a Party hold dear – the principles of freedom of choice and free speech. She has fought hard for the last three years for those principles through NZLSOS – and is a person whom we are proud to name as our Tauranga candidate,” Matt said.
Kirsten is a barrister and solicitor with her own law firm in Tauranga, KM Law. She graduated from the University of Auckland in 1999, and spent a number of years working at two of the top 10 law firms in Auckland before being employed by one of the largest law firms in Australia. She took time out from her career when her son was born and required regular hospital admissions and therapy. Kirsten’s son has a rare congenital syndrome, which pivoted her to become active in the world of disability – a cause very dear to her heart.
In 2011, Kirsten returned to private practice at a family-friendly law firm on the North Shore in Auckland, before relocating with her family to Tauranga in 2016. She started KM Law in 2016, and has enjoyed building a successful business that reflects her personal values.
Kirsten felt a moral duty to speak out as a lawyer in recent years to protect the fundamental democratic principles of all Kiwis for now and future generations and this has ultimately led her to play an active role in politics. Kirsten shares the passion and determination that Matt and our other DemocracyNZ candidates have to get our country back on track.
Kirsten said: “No-one takes lightly the decision to run for Parliament. DemocracyNZ and those who support our party know intrinsically there is a sea change occurring in New Zealand politics as more and more people are prepared to unify to achieve real, meaningful change in national policy and the direction we take as a country.”
